I don’t think it counts as a marathon if I only watched two, but last night I watched Groundhog Day and Ghostbusters. After such a crappy day yesterday, I had to just sit back and relax before work tomorrow, and that’s exactly what I did. I started browsing my Netflix Instant Watch queue and normally I don’t feel like watching the movies that are available, but Groundhog Day just sounded so good right now and so I began the two movie marathon (surprisingly a first for me as far as I can remember).

Groundhog Day is probably one of my favorite films now that I’ve seen it. I hear such great things about that movie, yet time and time again I passed it up. Fortunately, I didn’t wait so long that it would expire from the Instant Watch. The premise of reliving the same day over and over is something that I’ve consistently thought about. What if I could live a day without consequences and tomorrow, everything would be as if nothing happened?

First off, Bill Murray is one of my favorite actors, yet I really haven’t seen him in any major leading roles because the love I have for him stems from works of Wes Anderson. Steve Zissou, which I hardly remember watching, was fantastic and so was his role in Rushmore. He was great in this film as well and I just feel sympathetic to his character. For some unknown reason, you’re stuck reliving the same day and knowing that the woman you love and have expressed this love to won’t remember anything, it’s tragic. And imagining the psychological state you have to be in to actually go through with suicide multiple times. I cringe enough just thinking about gettingĀ  a paper cut.

So overall, great film. The cast did a wonderful job and the way the movie played out was perfect. I think I might have to pick it up on Blu-Ray.

Next up was Ghostbusters, being on a Bill Murray kick. I figured that it’s time I start watching these classic 80s films that I missed because I was 2-years-old when the 80s ended. I faintly remember watching Ghostbusters on TV but never paid too much attention to it because I was just too young.

This movie is absolutely ridiculous. Gotta love them 80s. The bad music, the hairdo’s. The fact that a building is about to crumble and yet an audience draws around it to cheer on the Ghostbusters. And for a PG movie there were a lot of suggestive themes and cussing. Maybe I just don’t watch many PG movies these days to realize what they can actually get away with. Despite all the logical holes in this movie (“Dickless Pecker” shuts down the container to what he believes contains hazardous gas then is surprised when it goes crazy?), it was really enjoyable. I can definitely see being a kid and just loving this movie. I’m a little sad that number 2 fell off the Instant Watch before I could watch it.

I might just have another movie marathon tonight, just to get through some of my queue. I kind of wished that Back to the Future was still available because there’s another 80′s film that I remember seeing on TV as a kid but never paid attention to it.
