Got the Princess Bride and Princess Monoke from Netflix. Figured that I might as well group the two together to give myself a nice theme to my movie watching. Both movies I’ve heard great things about, one being a movie I was turned off by because of the title (Princess Bride does not equal Princess Diaries thankfully) and the other was one I never got around to in my anime phase.

The Princess Bride was not as good as I was hoping. I can see, as a kid, where the humor lies. A love story with more humor than romantic lip locks, but in the end, I just didn’t enjoy it. I think it was because the humor felt directed at a much younger audience. I get why I’m suppose to laugh, but it just wasn’t happening. And the romantic plot was a bit too heavy with the romance so I was already turned off by it. Not that I ‘m bothered by romance plots, but when I came to learn that this movie was not a chick flick, the last thing I expected was have this sappy love story thrown in. Overall, I have to shamefully put this on my overrated list. Though to be fair, I was tired when watching this movie so maybe it might be better if I watch it again, but that’s a big if.

Princess Mononoke is one that won’t go on my overrated list. I was pleasantly surprised after seeing a bunch of anime that disappointed more than impressed. But I suppose you can’t go wrong with a Miyazaki film. I loved Spirited Away and this is one that I can love to. Not only was the animation superb, but the storyline was one that I was actually interested in for the entire 2 hours and 14 minutes. It’s a good movie when I don’t feel the urge to check the internet for news. The third act had me hoping that it doesn’t end horribly, as in leaving me distraught with sadness. There are many times where a death could have occurred, one I was fully expecting, but it never happened and I was happy by the time the film ended. Fantastic film and now I think I’ll put the Howl’s Moving Castle in my queue.

I was also a bit reminded of Shadow of the Colossus when watching Princess Mononoke and how the rumored movie could potentially be great. Take the story of Man and their want for power. They try to break into this sacred land where the dead could be revived. This would be the B story. The A story would center around our wanderer as he fights a couple of Colossus to revive his sweetheart. We get two story of his, one being a flashback of when he was happy with her up to her death (which wouldn’t be revealed until the end). The other portion of his story we see is of him traversing cross land conversing with his horse, Agro so we don’t necessarily need a love story for that portion of the film which would basically be the actual gameplay portion of the video game. Seriously, this could be an awesome movie given the right budget and artistic direction.
