autobots

I hated the original Transformers solely because there was so little interaction between the actual robots themselves, but after rewatching it before going in to the sequel, it was a lot more enjoyable than I remembered. And now that I’ve seen Revenge of the Fallen, suddenly the first one is like a work of art.

First of all, the script is terrible. It’s all over the place and the lines that are spewed from people’s mouths are horrible. It’s like they don’t realize that PG-13 can extend to people beyond the ages of 13 (Jockstrap scene? Really?). Then there’s the annoying supporting characters that should’ve been crushed under machinery in the final battles, Sam’s mother and his new roommate especially. They’re all over the top characters, overacted by those who played them. And never again give us Sam’s normal life. It’s boring and uninteresting. And the rest of the subplots of this movie just add to the wreck.

Then we get to the Transformers which I’m glad there are more this time around. Soundwave finally makes an appearance even if he never does come down to Earth to play. There’s also the inclusion of two racist twins, Mudflap and Skids, which is stirring some controversy. I didn’t have that much of a problem with them but they did get more screen time than they should have.

But the same problems exists as it did in the first film. First off, the designs are still way too complicated. I think they do that just so people won’t ask “How do they work?” It’s so complicated that we just have to believe it works. Secondly, there still is very little robot to robot interaction. The Decepticons had longer scenes with each other which is great, but now the Autobots get left out of the action. Other than the racist twins, there’s barely any conversations between any of the other ones. Sure, they interact with humans, but that’s not the Transformers I remember from the cartoons. Okay, so yes, this is a movie where the focus is on the humans and robot interaction probably costs a lot more money and time to create then blowing stuff up in the real world. I still would like to see some robot character development.

But maybe I’m expecting too much from this movie. They can’t all be the Dark Knight. At the very least, this movie was visually entertaining, with robots, explosions and Megan Fox galore. I still think it’s a bad movie, but as far as mindless entertainment goes, I’ll give it that much, though I don’t know if I consider that a compliment or an insult.
