I’m really bad at reviews. My thoughts get all scattered and what comes out is a jumbled mess. All I can say about District 9 is that it’s a great film and the future looks bright for the director Neill Blomkamp. You can almost see the potential of the Halo movie if he was still going to direct it. The story was extremely unique and showed aliens actually being less than the ones often depicted. There’s no enslaving the human race or destroying the White House here. These guys are alien versions of immigrants forced to live in the slums. The action is top-notch and isn’t a sensory overload like Transformers 2 was. There wasn’t as much as I was expecting, but it’s a nice change from what I’ve seen so far from this summer. The computer generated stuff looked fantastic and the aliens fit so well into their surroundings.
I can’t say if it lived up to my hype or not, but it’s definitely not a bad movie. There’s potential for a sequel but I don’t know how I’d feel about that. It’s a good stand alone film that doesn’t really need more. There are mysteries left unsolved, but those to me are better left for the imagination. Though if we do get one, we most likely won’t be getting it soon, if the quotes in the last half of the movie are any indication.
Overall, great film that stands as an example of a good summer movie. Has a lot of action, but the story is deep and compelling. Hope to see more from Blomkamp.
