This is the very definition of a fun movie. I won’t begin to compare it to Shaun of the Dead because they really are different movies. That said , Shaun of the Dead is still one of my favorite movies ever. THAT said, Zombieland was still an awesome movie.
I don’t get why the zombie craze is so huge. Hell, I’m in that wave of zombie fans and I don’t know why. For me, it started with the Resident Evil video games and when 28 Days Later (it’s a zombie movie damnit!) and Shaun of the Dead came along, it pushed me to a point of no return. Zombies were forever awesome. Though, I can’t say I’m a purist and am ashamed to say it, but I have never watched George A. Romero’s movies except for Night of the Living Dead. And now that I’ve said it, it’s my goal to watch his films. Perfect for a Halloween warm up.
But enough about the old, the latest addition to the zombie genre, Zombieland, is out and kicking ass. Director Ruben Fleischer takes on his first major film, and he hit this one out of the ball park. It’s looking like a good year for new directors entering the playing field.
As for the acting, I wasn’t a huge fan of the film Adventureland, but Jesse Eisenberg was a great lead in this film. I hear him referred to as the poor man’s Michael Cera a lot, but he really has his own style. I could not see Cera in this movie.
Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin finish up the zombie killing team, along side the “secret” cameo (thanks IMDB) which makes the movie even greater. With movies like this, I tend to worry that the actual plot line is going to kill the fun, but I never felt a moment where it got too serious. Even the revelation of what Tallahassee (Harrelson) lost didn’t put a damper on the rest of the film, despite how sad and dark it could’ve been.
Overall, this is a movie I’ll be buying day one when it gets released on DVD. It’s one I can watch over and over. It’s just plain fun.
On that note, Dead Rising 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 can’t be released soon enough.
